Types of colorectal surgical procedures

Colectomy
This is also called a large bowel resection and involves the complete or partial removal of your colon.

Colostomy
This procedure is performed when you can’t pass stool through your anus because of an illness, injury, or an issue with the digestive tract. It allows waste to exit the body through a hole in the abdomen, where it can be collected in a pouch.

Bowel anastomosis
This surgery involves removing a part of a structure in your body that is tube-shaped (such as your intestines) and reattaching the ends.

Colonoscopy
This is a procedure that allows doctors to inspect the lower digestive tract and remove polyps (irregular growths) from the intestines.

Hemorrhoidectomy
This is a surgery that is used to remove internal or external haemorrhoids, which are swollen veins in your anus or lower rectum.

Fistulotomy
This is a procedure for anal fistulas, wherein the fistula is cut open so that it will heal with a flat scar.

Rectal prolapse surgery
This is surgery conducted when the rectum protrudes through the anus. Various techniques can be used to treat prolapses, such as abdominal rectopexy, or perineal procedures.
