FAQs

How do I book an appointment?

You will likely have a written referral from your referring doctor / GP. You will need this when you book your appointment so you can be eligible for the Medicare rebate associated with the consult as well as any subsequent appointments. Your referral will remain valid for up to 12 months from the date your doctor gave it to you. We can accept a referral in the name of Sydney Gut Clinic, one of our doctors specifically. We will also accept a referral in the name of another Gastroenterologist – or Colorectal Surgeon.

To book an appointment, please contact us – you can do this via our online appointment form.

Do I need a referral?

If you would like to be eligible for the Medicare rebate for consult and procedure fees, you will need a valid referral. Referrals are valid for up to 12 months. We are happy to see patients who do not have a referral, it just means you will not be able to claim the Medicare Rebate for fees. We still recommend a referral as it will help us expedite your appointment.

Do I have to have a colonoscopy if I see a Gastroenterologist?

When you come for your consult, your Specialist will determine what tests and investigations are required. Not all cases require a colonoscopy, but many do as being able to see inside the gut and take biopsies of the tissue provides accurate results, from which diagnosis can be made.

If you are nervous about having a procedure, please mention this to your Specialist and the best way forward will be found for you, in your circumstances.
